Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri’s wine origins date back to the 14th century, when local Hieronymite monks founded a sanctuary and farm on the site. The modern winery was established in 1967, when Jamie Rodríguez Salís purchased vineyards at the heart of the former estate and began tending the ancient, abandoned site. Remelluri produced the first single-vineyard Rioja of the modern era in 1971, focusing on the concepts of terroir and specificity when much of Rioja favored blends from sourced grapes made to the house’s style. Today, Jaime’s children Telmo and Amaia run the estate as winemaker and viticulturist, continuing the organic farming methods which have always been used here.
Located along the slope of the Sierra de Toloño mountains near the village of Labastida in Rioja Alavesa, Remelluri’s vineyards are the highest elevation in Rioja, planted between 500-950 meters. The mountain-grown grapes at Remelluri are almost always the last picked in Rioja. Poor, stony soils with layers of calcareous clay give considerable structure for aging.
The south-facing plots are protected by harsh weather, with the Atlantic influence of the Bay of Biscay is only a 90 minute drive away. The bay provides abundant rainfall and cooler temperatures than the rest of the region, lending incredible acidity and freshness.
This Rioja Reserva is their flagship wine, sourced from the estate’s most important vineyards consisting of 148 plots in 25 sites. These indigenous grapes were planted between 1930 and 1989 on calcareous clay, limestone, bedrock, and stone soils. Hand harvested, then fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of stainless steel tanks and old foudres. The wine then moves to foudres and barrels of various sizes (20% new), followed by at least 5 years of bottle aging in Remelluri’s cellar.
At once deep & mysterious, yet bright and spicy, with fresh, nuanced fruit. Ripe dark cherries, stewed blackberries, cassis, violet, spice box, vanilla, and cinnamon, with savory noes of leather, cigar box, and dill. Concentrate, without being too weighty, with polished tannins toward a clean, earthy finish. Ready now, but could easily age several more years.
85% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, 5% Graciano. Organic.
