Prieto y Prieta Whisky is the result of an exciting collaboration between two friends. Begun in 2018, the brand is the brainchild of Txomin Alcorta and Carlos Moreno, two people with rich histories in the beverage world. Txomin, working in cooperage, originally hails from Basque country and Carlos, the founder of Mezcal Koch has been working with agave in Oaxaca for 15 years. The goal was to make a spirit highlighting the diversity of Oaxaca’s terroir outside of agave. Marrying Txomin’s knowledge of barrels and spirit maturation with Carlo’s experience in the Oaxacan landscape of spirit distillation proved to be the perfect match. Initial batches of the spirit were made for local restaurants like Criollio and Levadura de Olla in Centro before expanding production and settling on their flagship whisky made of 4 Oaxacan corn varietals aged in 3 distinct barrels.
Preito y Prieta’s flagship Whiskey de Maiz is a unique corn whiskey produced using four varieties of 100% Oaxacan heirloom corn matured in three different cask types. Aged for three years before blending and bottling, the influence of the casks are seamlessly integrated, lending subtle notes of baking spice and red fruit without overshadowing the grain-forward complexity of the whiskey.
