In the winemaking world, you typically get just one harvest per year. Some adventurous souls “chase” harvests, perfecting their techniques by bouncing between the Northern & Southern Hemispheres to double their efforts each year.
Chicagoans Michael Kush & Jennifer Kingen Kush have chased harvests across 5 continents, 8 countries, and 36 vintages, armed with just passports, backpacks, and a passion for adventure to experience the world’s greatest wine regions. Of all the places they’ve visited, they’ve narrowed their focus to the two that have been most inspirational: Central Otago, New Zealand & the Douro Valley, Portugal.
This third vintage of this Portuguese red blend is sourced from 50-60 year old vines from the Quinta da Costa vineyard. “Via Rock and Stone” refers to the schist (stone) soil the grapes grow on, and the granite (rock) lagar used to naturally ferment the wine.
Lagar is the Portuguese term for a shallow trough, typically used in port production, where the grapes are traditionally trod by foot. Workers link arms to maintain balance while they stomp on the grapes to break up the berries for better extraction of color & tannin. After fermentation, the wine is aged in a combination of neutral barrel and stainless steel tank.
Smooth & bold, with dark blackberry & blueberry fruit, tinted with violets & spice. The bright acidity and minerally richness lead to a lingering, fruit-forward finish.
