Kelley Fox started making wine at Oregon icon Eyrie Vineyards, and that influence clearly shows in her eponymous label, which she started in 2007. She views winemaking as responding to the essence of the fruit from each block, and treats each year, vineyard, and block separately, preferring a low-intervention style and biodynamic methods.
Handpicked grapes for Nerthus come from Eola Springs, Maresh, and Weber Vineyards, planted between 1982 & 1991. Much of the Early Muscat was pressed whole cluster & fermented in stainless steel. The rest was destemmed into small fermentors, before free-run juice was added to the Early Muscat. Aged 4 months in steel.
Nerthus (named for a Germanic fertility goddess) is beautifully floral on the nose, with honeysuckle, wildflowers, and flowery spice. Mouthwatering peach & apricot join Rainier cherry & white cranberry laced with orange oil. A stony minerality & racy acidity carry through the bone-dry, lingering finish.
50% Pinot Gris, 30% Early Muscat, 20% Riesling. Natural. Biodynamic.
