In 1935, a group of 36 growers from the Salento peninsula banded together to create Cantina Sociale Cooperativa, focusing on indigenous grapes, lower yields, and meticulous attention to detail in the cellar to promote the area’s terroir. Their actions ultimately led to the Copertino DOC in 1976, and the co-op now spans 300+ hectares and hundreds of growers.
Their Copertino Reserve is made only in the best vintages. Mostly Negroamaro, with a bit of Malvasia Nera grown on the region’s red clay soil on top of hard tufa limestone. Fermented & aged stainless steel, it’s released only after several years in bottle.
Complex layers of brambly raspberries, black cherries & blackberries accented by orange peel, dried currants, spicy cinnamon, allspice, & cola. Savory herbs, wild mushrooms, cured meat, funky leathery notes, & gamy nuances play with minerally notes of iron & salt. The marvelous acid-fruit-tannin balance & velvety texture can only come from several years of patient aging. Warm, rich, generous, & lively, this is a soul-satisfying red for chilly fall nights.
Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera.
