Château Maucoil’s winemaking history dates back to the Roman empire, when Caeser’s legions planted vineyards along the spring that runs through the property. The Château was built in 1624 on the plateau of what is now the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
Macoil is one of the few estates to farm all 13 allowed grapes in Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Picpoul, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Muscardin, Picardan, Counois, Cinsault, Terret Noir, & Vaccarèse (no we can’t name them all either). Their youngest vines are around 40 years old, while the oldest were planted back in 1895. The estate converted to organic in 2011, and was certified in 2014.
Their 45 hectares cover three types of terroir: red clay sub soils with deep rooted vines near the winery, hard limestone rock with subsoils of clay or molasses sandstone in the west, and sandy slopes formed by the Rhone River to the east, surrounded by wooded areas and stony slopes
Macoil’s Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc is a 50/50 blend of Grenache Blanc and Clairette, from younger vines grown on clay-limestone soils. Hand harvested in the early mornings, the Clairette & Grenache Blanc then are vinified separately in stainless steel tanks, with no malolactic fermentation to preserve freshness and balance. The blend comes together just before bottling.
Exotic and curvaceous, the bouquet is filled with white peach and apple blossoms. Ripe grilled pineapple, yellow apple, honeyed grapes, apricot jam, and lime tree come through on the rich & fleshy palate. Delightfully creamy & full bodied, the fleshy fruit is balanced by a bright acidity. A beautiful minerality rounds off the long, fruity finish.
Grenache Blanc, Clairette.
