The grapes are sourced from a unique, sandy soiled, west-orientated plot within the castle grounds of Villafranca del Bierzo, planted at 580 metres above sea level. The westerly aspect allows the grapes to ripen slowly. Planting density is 4,000- 5,000 plants per hectare. Raul believes the sandy vineyard soils on their plots contribute richer, tropical flavours to Godello. The climate is continental with an Atlantic influence.
Viticulture is practicing organic- everything is done by hand and vines are not irrigated.
The grapes are handpicked on a single day before destemming at the winery. The grapes are kept cold in 5,000 litre tanks for 24 hours before direct pressing. The must is then transferred to 700-litre used oak barrels, where the wine ferments with wild yeasts and remains in barrel until bottling five days before the next harvest. The wine is fined with clay and gently press-filtered before bottling.
A fine, textured Godello with unctuous mango and pineapple characters kept in check by bright linear acidity. It’s a serious, structured wine, but there’s no shortage of body
