John & Lucy Niven founded Cadre Wines to showcase the lively, high acid, energetic, mineral-driven white white wines from Edna Valley’s cool climate vineyards. John’s grandfather, Jack Niven, was a trailblazer in the San Luis Obispo wine community, and planted the historic Paragon Vineyard in the early 1970s.
Much of this Grüner comes from the far southwest side of the Paragon Vineyard, planted in 2007, with additional grapes from Jack Ranch & Morro View vineyards. The vines grow on one of the steepest sites in Edna Valley, in direct path of fierce winds rushing in from the Pacific.
Soils are well-drained and littered with flecks of limestone and an under-layer of sandstone, shale, and mudstone. Fermented & aged in steel, with 7 months on the lees.
“Band of Stones” starts off with a salty citrus edge and earthy aromas of North African spices. Jasmine, tropical fruit, lime leaf and grapefruit soda join ginger & white pepper before a savory, zesty, minerally finish.
