Manuel Moraga Gutierrez founded Cacique Maravilla to focus on traditional, non-interventionist wines from Yumbel, in Chile’s Bio-Bio Valley. Pipeño is an old style of Chilean wine, meant to be enjoyed by farmers straight from the “pip” (pipe).
Many of the País vines used for this Pipeño are over 250 years old, lovingly tended by generations of the Gutierrez family. Dry-farmed, with no chemical intervention, the grapes grow on volcanic sand formed by redeposited ash (known as “trumao” in Chile). Destemmed, then spontaneously fermented in open-top lagares of Raulí (native Chilean pink oak), it ages in Raulí pipas (barrels) for a few months before being bottled unfiltered with no added sulphur.
Gamay-like, it's filled with bright red berries, a crunchy acidity, and soft tannins. Great with a chill!
