Winegrowing has always played an important role in the Umathum family history. Until the early 1970s, they sold most of the grapes to the local co-op. The current owner, Josef Umathum, is known as one of the great champions of traditional Austrian grape varieties, and converted the estate to biodynamic farming in 2005.
Umathum’s 60 hectares of vines sit on the north & east sides of Lake Neusidl, on varied soils of limestone, loam, slate, and silicates, each planted to the variety that suits it best.
The Zweigelt Classic is sourced from gravelly soils. Fermented with partial whole cluster & native yeasts, then aged in large Austrian oak casks.
Fresh & pure, with dark black & purple woodland berries, violets, black pepper, juniper, and crushed stones. Aromatic & tart, with a velvety texture and slightly grippy tannins.
100% Zweigelt. Organic. Biodynamic.
