Ben Caldwell & Mauricio Ruiz Cantú met while studying oenology at the University of Adelaide, and later founded Somos (“we are” in Spanish) to focus on lesser-known Italian and Spanish varietals grown in sustainable vineyards with minimal intervention techniques.
This skin contact Verdejo is the result of 2 pickings—one earlier in the season, and one later, when the grapes are riper. Destemmed, and fermented on the skins with native yeasts, 50% is pressed to old oak with regular lees stirring to build texture. The other 50% is sealed on the skins for 6 months before blending & bottling, unfined & unfiltered.
Youthful, juicy, vibrant, and textural, with oodles of ginger spice, tangerine, orange peel, baked pears, toffee apple on the nose. Orange pith, mandarin crunch, soft brioche and caramel comes through on the hazy palate.
