Steve Pannell grew up on his parents’ wine farm, Moss Wood, in Margaret River. Knowing how demanding it was to run a winery, Steve decided not to continue on at Moss Wood when his parents were ready to retire. Instead, he spent time traveling to some of the world’s best wine regions, working for such illustrious producers as Aldo Vajra in Barolo, Domaine Dujac, & Comte Lafon in Burgundy, and Hardys in Australia.
In 2004, Steve finally opened his own winery, S.C. Pannell, with his wife Fiona Lindquist in McLaren Vale. They aim to produce low-yielding fruits from old vines, fermented in open top containers with natural yeasts, use limited new oak, and bottle unfined & unfiltered.
Basso (from “bassus”, Latin for “low”) celebrates Steve’s low-intervention style. Vines of 30-45 year old Grenache come two sites: one from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs bringing the high-toned aromatics and the ironstone-riddled gravel of McLaren Vale. The grapes are handpicked and fermented 50% whole bunch on the skins for two weeks. After being
pressed to four-year-old 46hL French foudres they were hit with a small 30ppm does of sulfur and aged quietly for seven months.
This lighter, fresher, more “smashable” Grenache is filled with squishy raspberries, wild strawberries, pomegrante, and plum, with orange rind, red licorice, cherry liqueur, white pepper, gamey-like floral tones, and musk lollies. Spicy earth tones and subtle notes of balsamic finish this bright, crunch red with a core of fine-grained tannins.
