After working as an oenologist & consultant for mass-marketed wines for several years, Matthieu Dumarcher recognized the impact of the excessive use of chemical products, high yields, and manipulation in most conventionally-made wines. He started his own winery in 2006 to work in a more artisanal way, with organic farming and minimal intervention in the cellar. Today, he crafts fresh, elegant, precise wines at his small facility in La Baume de Transit in the Drôme, a lesser-known area in the mid-Rhone.
Léon et Séraphin is his Vin de France, (though it could be labeled Côte-du-Rhône), from 2 parcels of very old (45-80 yo) vines. The Syrah grows on clay for water retention, while the Grenache grows on red-clay soils studded with big stones.
The hand picked grapes are partially destemmed, while the rest goes through whole-cluster carbonic maceration. Gently pressed, it then ages for 12 months in stainless steel, with just a touch of sulphur added at bottling.
Juicy & savory notes of black cherry, raspberry, blueberry, sweet tobacco leaf, thyme, and spice. It’s elegantly restrained, fresh, and eminently drinkable.
Syrah, Grenache. Organic. Biodynamic. Natural.
