Marjan Simčič has 18 hectares of vines straddling the border between Italy & Slovenia. The winery is on the Slovenian side, just 200 meters west of the border, but the vines have been planted on both sides for decades.
The vines grow in various micro-terroirs formed by the many small hills of Goriška Brda. Grapes benefit from the area’s mineral deposits, high amounts of quartz, excellent water drainage, and faults in the subsoil through which deep roots can burrow.
Marjan follows traditional vinification styles, similar to his father & ancestors. Grapes come from 14-34 year old vines grown on marl, clay, & limestone. After macerating on the skins for 48 hours, the juice ferments naturally, then ages 6 months on the lees.
Intensely complex, floral aromas develop into fruity & spicy notes of peach, yellow apple, grapefruit, and cinnamon. The full body brings rich notes of dried apricots, marmalade, and melon, before a balanced, flinty finish.
100% Pinot Grigio. Biodynamic. Natural.
