Lioco is the brainchild of former Spago wine director Kevin O’Connor & wine salesperson Matt Licklider. The two were critical of big, heavy-handed winemaking, and wanted to create wines that favored nuance over power. Today Matt & his wife Sara source fruit from family-owned vineyards in Santa Cruz, Sonoma, & Mendocino counties.
This rosé comes from 80+ year-old planting of dry-farmed Carignan in the Bartolomei vineyard in Mendocino, where severe diurnal shifts allow for long hang time. Grapes grow grow on red clay soils strewn with fist-sized rocks, then are hand-harvested, lightly whole-cluster pressed, and fermented long & cool in steel, with slow malo & gentle filtration.
Fresh & complex, with notes of watermelon Jolly Rancher, guava, pomelo, & rhubarb. Fresh basil & cilantro add an herbal lift, while limestone & sea shell bring a refreshing minerality.
100% Carignan.
