Kanonkop derives its name from a small hill (kopek) on the Simonsberg mountain where a cannon (kanon) was fired to announce the arrival of ships in the nearby Table Bay. The cannon signaled to local farmers that it was time to load up their wagons with fresh produce to bring to market.

Pinotage is South Africa’s most famous red grape. A cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault (often called “Hermitage” at the time), it was created by Abraham Izak Perold, the first Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University in 1924. Kanonkop was an early adopter of the grape, planting their first vines in 1941. Today Pinotage remains the flagship wine of the estate.

The 2018 Estate Pinotage comes from 30-65 year old dry farmed bush vines grown on decomposed granite & hutton soils. Fermented in open-top concrete, the wine then goes to 225L French Nevers oak barrels (80% new, the rest 2nd fill) for 16 months.

Aromas of fig, blackberry jam, tar, and roasted meats lead to a palate of cedar-influenced vanilla, cola, red plum, cured meat, clove, star anise, and cardamom. The dry finish brings silky, moderate tannins & good length. A good pair with beef stews, roasted cauliflower or gamey meats.
