Miljenko “Mike” Grgich first garnered internatonal attention at the infamous 1976 Judgement of Paris blind tasting where his 2003 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay beat out several famed white Burgundies as the finest white wine in the world. The next year, he left Montelena and started his own winery, Grgich Hills Estate with friends Austin Hills & Mary Lee Strebl. The rest is Napa Valley history.
This Cabernet comes from Grgich’s estate vineyards in Yountville, Rutherford & Calistoga, all of which are farmed with organic & biodynamic methods. Each lot is fermented separately with native yeasts and 4 weeks of skin contact to extract color and tannins. The lots began aging separately for several months before blending, with 21 months total in French oak, 60% new barrels.
Deep & rich, with aromas of red fruits, black plum and blood orange. The palate brings savory notes of tobacco, sage & rosemary, with sweeter tones of fig, anise & blackberry compote, before an exceptionally long, silky, complex finish.
Elegant and full-bodied, with blackberries, black licorice and cocoa powder.
89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Biodynamic.
