Jacques Lignier purchased the family’s first vines in Morey-Saint-Denis in 1880, where the domaine still exists today under the care of Hubert Lignier and his son Laurent. They now have 9 hectares of vines, mostly in the northern Côte de Nuits, with some newer holdings in Pommard and Nuits Saint Georges.
Though Lignier is based in Morey-Saint-Denis, their house style shows beautifully with the minerality of Pommard. The 0.41 acre sloping terraced vineyard “En Brescul” overlooks the town of Beaune was planted in 1997 on clay-limestone soil.
Grapes are sorted and destemmed before fermenting in open cement tanks for 1-520 days with only natural yeasts. The wine ages for 18 months on the lees in 228L barrels (20% new).
Broody dark fruits mingle with savory notes of venison, stony soil, bonfire, and spicy herbal nuances. The fine-grained tannins are poised and pretty, with an impressive sense of tension and precision.
