Domaine Chasselay is one of the oldest wineries in Beaujolais. Latin archives from 1464 note Jean Chasselay as the first in the family to own and work the vineyards at Les Eparcieux in Châtillon d’Azergues. Several centuries later, Jean-Gilles Chasselay and his wife Christiane took over the family estate in 1981. Their children Claire & Fabien joined the family estate in 2007 after studying oenology & viticulture and the wine trade. Today the Chasselays have 15 hectares of vines, with vineyards in Côte de Brouilly, Brouille, Fleurie, Morgon, and Moulin-à-Vent.
An early adopter of organic viticulture, Chasselay was certified organic 2006. Natural methods are standard here, with no weedkillers or synthetic chemicals in the vineyards, no added yeasts, and minimal sulfur. Hedges & flowers line the vineyards to promote biodiversity, preserve the local fauna, fight erosion, & protect from the non-organic methods of their conventional neighbors. Cover crops like clovers, chickweed, speedwell, bluegrass, and bindweed line the rows to help reduce disease and erosion. They goal to make wines that celebrate the transparent flavor of the grape & the terroir on which it grows.
This cuvée “Beaujolais is Not Dead” was first produced in 2016. More Burgundian than Nouveau in style, it’s meant to be a simple but delicious gastronomic wine. Grapes come from a single 2.5 hectare parcel of 45 year old vines, grown on clay-limestone soils studded with granite & the famed golden stones of Des Pierres Dorées. The soil here is more fertile & flatter than the famed Crus of Northern Beaujolais. Partial whole-cluster carbonic maceration is followed by a 15 day fermentation in cement with only native yeasts. The wine then ages in concrete for a year, with just a touch of sulfur at bottling.
Earthy and concentrated, with fruity notes of cranberry, strawberry, raspberry, boysenberry, and citrus zest. Beautiful spice & floral tones align with graphite, warm concrete, licorice, soft herbs, and stems. The shining acidity could easily take a chill on a warm summer evening on your favorite patio or rooftop.
