Since the inaugural vintage of “Le Cigare Volant” Randall Grahm has been a tireless champion of Rhone varietals, and was named “The Rhone Ranger” by Wine Spectator in 1989. His relentless curiosity has led to various vinous pursuits around the world, but he’s become more focused in recent years, making wines with a softer hand in the vineyard and winery.
Bonny Doon’s flagship wine, “Le Cigare Volant”, is an homage to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In 1954, the village council of CdP was worried that UFOs (“flying cigars”) might damage the vineyards, so they passed an ordinance prohibiting the vessels from landing. It must have worked, as there have been no sightings in the area since.
With a higher percentage of Cinsault, this edition of “Le Cigar Volant” is juicy, bright, exuberantly joyful, and savory. Full of kirsch, black & red currant, boysenberry, and blackberry, with mace, star anise, barrel toast, and chapparal spice.
42% Grenache, 31% Cinsault, 24% Syrah, 2% Petite Sirah, 1% Counoise.
