Bill Easton first fell for Rhône grapes while working in a wine shop in the Bay Area after college, eventually founding Terre Rouge winery with his wife Jane O’Riordan in 1984 to show off how Rhône varietals were uniquely suited to California terroir. Two years later, they started the Easton label to bottle other varietals ideal for Amador County and the Sierra Foothills.

Amador County is home to some very old Zinfandel vines, some dating back to the 1860s. Bill was able to acquire some of the region’s top high-elevation sites, some of which climb to 3200 feet. The cool, rocky-soiled sites bring high complexity to their wines. Bill likes to hold his wines back to age in bottle, so they’re ready to drink as soon as they’re released.

Easton’s vines grow on classic, vermilion-colored Amador decomposed granite soil. Aged 10 months in neutral French oak, it’s big, sumptuous, and juicy, with brambly blackberries, dried currants, licorice, and dried orange peel. The savory soil comes through in smoked pepper, sweet anise, sage, and cedar notes. Velvety tannins carry through the long, elegant, spicy finish.

Zinfandel. Sustainable.
